User-Experience Researcher

Situated Research is looking for like-minded individuals to assist us with our cutting edge user-experience (UX) research within software and video games. The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of both design and software development, to offer mission-critical solutions that balance aesthetics with functionality.

Responsibilities:

As a User-Experience Researcher, you will apply your background in user-experience design and usability to improve user experiences for our wide domain of clients. Ideally, you should have a solid understanding design and information architecture (IA) as well, for occasional projects where a wireframe and/or low-fidelity prototype is needed. An understanding of qualitative and quantitative research would be useful for understanding and improving our user experience research process.

Requirements:

  • Five years or more experience in human factors, user experience and usability
  • Master’s degree or Ph.D. in psychology, HCI or related field
  • A passion for planning, creating, evaluating, and refining world-class software user experiences
  • Ability to learn / work with new research software
  • Can type 50+ WPM (might be needed during testing)
  • Proven ability to provide clients with top-notch deliverables
  • Familiarity with video games, social media, IA
  • Ability to generate low-fidelity prototypes / wireframes / mockups (in your favorite tool such as Visio or Photoshop)
  • A strong sense of design, yet open to new ideas
  • Some consulting or project management experience would be preferred
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong work ethic and attention to detail

This position is offered as contract to full-time hire so we can see you in action. Competitive pay is based on experience. Transcriptionist / Research Personnel

A transcriptionist / research personnel is needed for a west-suburban (Naperville, IL) research firm. We are looking for a part-time, efficient transcriptionist to transcribe video tape of software and technology use. Opportunity for full-time may be available if desired. We offer a flexible schedule and attractive compensation.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be able to transcribe video data, using a specialized program in a Windows environment. A fast learner that can quickly become proficient in new software, and can learn a specialized notation system (representing speech qualities or non-verbal behavior) is key.

Requirements:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word / Excel / PowerPoint)
  • Ability to type 70+ words per minute
  • Ability to learn to use new software, become efficient at transcribing / coding
  • Ability to learn a specialized notation that conveys speech acts (such as pauses, overlapping speech, delivery speed and tone, etc.)
  • Familiarity with video games a plus
  • Bachelors degree or equivalent, bonus points for those with advanced degrees or degrees of related fields (such as English, Communication, etc.)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong work ethic and attention to detail

Skills Needed:

Graphic Design (Web) Freelancer

Are you a skilled, passionate graphic artist looking to create the next generation of websites? We are looking for talented designers that enjoy creating simple, elegant, and aesthetically pleasing websites with a focus on usability. At Situated Research, usability is paramount, so you should be familiar with things like usability heuristics and user-centered design techniques. You should have a good understanding of color psychology, typography, and imagery. Interactive / Creative / Flash Developer (Freelancer)

We are looking for a talented individual that understands both the back-end of Flash and the creative front-end as well. You should be well versed in ActionScript 2 or 3, and have a good design sense for designing Flash animation (tween classes, etc.). You should have a good working knowledge of the Adobe Suite (Photoshop, etc.) so you can edit graphics, and then optimize them for Flash. You might be designing an entire website in Flash, or perhaps a banner ad or possibly even a small video game. The more capable and creative you are, the better. You should understand usability thoroughly, so you can make informed decisions about when Flash might be appropriate for a project, and when it might be a hindrance that distracts the end-user. Examples of your previous work should reveal clean, highly-usable designs rather than annoying, distracting abuses of animation.

Mid-level Web Developer

Our web development group is looking to fill a Mid-level Web Developer position in our Naperville, IL office. Work will be primarily on the back end, so you should have solid development skills in HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Candidates should have experience in scripting languages and database-driven, dynamic languages such as ASP / .NET, PHP / MySQL, etc.

  • Creating website templates; optimizing existing websites

  • Designing interface improvements / enhancements, scripts

While we expect you to be self-sufficient, you can expect some guidance on projects. However, the more resourceful and motivated you are, the better.

We are easy-going and will work with your schedule, but we expect someone willing to work hard and get the job done. You'll need to be easily accessible, especially during typical business hours if you decide to work from home part of the week. We'd like to see you face-to-face occasionally, so preference will be given to local candidates. (Naperville is an easy reverse-commute from Chicago.)
